Mediterranean Summer IV trades the brightest hour of the day for something softer. Ghostly white and grey umbrella shapes hover at the top of the panel, their outlines loosely sketched, barely filled in, while a green striped mat and a crumpled pink cloth ground the foreground in warm, sunbaked sand. Small figures move along the tideline, rendered as little more than gesture and shadow. Alberto Márquez lets the palette fade toward pastel here, and the looser, hazier handling gives the whole scene the feel of a late afternoon just before the light starts to go. It's the same coast as the rest of the series, seen at a slower hour.

About the artist

Alberto Marquez

Alberto Marquez is a painter of bold temperament and strong visual instinct. His work operates in the space between figuration and abstraction, building compositions through layers of colour and form that reward close looking. There is an expressive directness to his practice, a willingness to commit fully to each mark, that gives his paintings an immediacy and presence that is difficult to ignore.
