Helder Batista
Helder Batista was born in Paris in 1964 and is self-taught, give or take the evening classes he took at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He works in both painting and sculpture, and he treats materials as an open question: resin, concrete, wood, neon, oil and acrylic all turn up in his work, sometimes within the same piece.
The work is deliberately ambiguous. He draws on Abstract Expressionism and strips things back as far as they will go, with no flourishes and nothing decorative, because what interests him is leaving room for you to project your own reading onto it. Freedom of expression is the point, his and yours.
