Under a wide, cloud-streaked blue sky, Mediterranean Summer III settles into a quieter corner of the coast. A hot-pink lounge chair anchors the foreground, its surface flecked with loose drips of paint, while yellow and green striped umbrellas mark the tideline behind it and a small sailboat drifts across the bay. Alberto Márquez keeps the palette bold but the mood relaxed, mixing precise linework with looser passages of collage and wash so the scene feels both mapped out and spontaneous at once. It's the kind of afternoon that asks nothing of you beyond sitting still and watching the light change over the water.

About the artist

Alberto Marquez

Alberto Marquez trained at the Escuela de Artes de Orihuela and, through a PETRA exchange in 1993, at the École Nationale d'Arts Décoratifs in Limoges, where he worked in both the enamel and painting workshops. He then spent seven years in Federico Chico's painting workshop in Orihuela. He paints between figuration and abstraction, in layers of colour and expressive mark-making, and has been exhibiting since 1992, including three shows at Galería Juan de Juanes in Alicante.
