Bloom throws a lot at you at once, and that's the point: a pink flower bursts open at the top, a green vine loops through black scribble, and a plate of purple-eyed fruit sits at the bottom like it wandered in from another painting entirely. Batista builds the whole surface in thick, layered color, then lets thin red drips run down over it, as if the painting is still wet and still deciding what it wants to be. Stand back and it reads as a garden, a table, a memory of both. Stand close and it's just color meeting color, doing exactly what color does best.

About the artist

Helder Batista

Helder Batista was born in Paris in 1964 and is self-taught, beyond evening classes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He works in painting and sculpture, across resin, concrete, wood, neon, oil and acrylic, sometimes in the same piece. Drawing on Abstract Expressionism, he strips the work back so that nothing is decorative and there is room for the viewer to project their own reading onto it.
