Junkyard Gems I

Junkyard Gems I takes the same stack of Volkswagen Beetles and drops the temperature: a dark, almost black sky replaces the blue, and the cars themselves lean toward deeper, more saturated color, teal, crimson, purple, burnt orange. Jesús Llopis keeps the same grid, four rows of six front ends piled on top of each other, but the mood shifts from playful to something moodier and more theatrical. Up close, the paint stays loose and quick, each headlight and grille built from just a few confident strokes. Seen next to its companion piece, it's the same idea told at night instead of at noon.
