Melkio, contemporary artist represented by Jaloe Art Gallery

Melkio

Melkio was born in Genoa in 1984 and has been drawing for as long as he can remember. He means that literally: there has always been a pen or a pencil in his hand and a sheet of paper somewhere nearby. It felt so natural that for years he took it for granted, and threw most of it away.

He kept making things through his twenties while working in marketing, and treated it as a hobby because that is what it looked like from the outside. The lockdown of 2020 changed that. He decided to commit to it properly, and that is where his career as a professional artist begins.

He works as a phygital artist, moving between physical and digital tools without treating them as separate worlds. Animated projections, paintings and decorated objects all come out of the same practice and all look unmistakably like his: a minimal palette, a strong defining line, nothing that does not need to be there. His research goes in one direction, reducing a message to a handful of lines, somewhere between Pop Art and illustration. He leaves deliberate space in the work so you bring your own reading to it.

That consistency is what makes him a natural fit for brands, and he develops dedicated collections and campaigns alongside his own work. He also keeps experimenting with digital art, installations and live performance, which is where the work gets pushed furthest.

Since I can remember, I have always had a pen or pencil in my hand and a sheet of paper to sketch. For me it was the most natural thing to do. I took it for granted, and that is why I would often throw them away.
