Our garden picks up where Pink Garden leaves off, same wide-eyed creature-face, same loose garden of shapes, but shifted into cooler blues and greens. A turquoise head with pink-ringed eyes anchors the top, while a green, red-spotted form crouches lower down like something half-plant, half-animal. A single pink line snakes through the black scribble at the center, holding the whole composition together. Batista lets the two paintings talk to each other this way, same cast of characters, different mood, different hour of the day.

About the artist

Helder Batista

Helder Batista was born in Paris in 1964 and is self-taught, beyond evening classes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He works in painting and sculpture, across resin, concrete, wood, neon, oil and acrylic, sometimes in the same piece. Drawing on Abstract Expressionism, he strips the work back so that nothing is decorative and there is room for the viewer to project their own reading onto it.
