Manel Alba
Manel Alba was born in Valencia in 1990. Space sits at the center of his pictorial language, and his paintings grow out of a close study of the relationship between void and presence. Working with color and gesture against open, unmarked ground, he lets what is left out carry as much weight as what is painted, building toward a sense of immensity where the non-material outweighs the material.
Negative space works as an active presence in his compositions, a place for the viewer to slow down and take in the intangible. Alba's paintings ask to be read for their stillness as much as their color, and they hold real depth and vastness inside very simple arrangements. In pushing at what a painted surface needs to carry, he draws out a quiet poetry from emptiness itself.
