Alberto Márquez

Alberto Marquez trained at the Escuela de Artes de Orihuela between 1990 and 1996, which is where the foundations of his practice were laid. In 1993 a PETRA exchange took him to the École Nationale d'Arts Décoratifs in Limoges, where he worked in the enamel workshop of M. Redon and the painting workshop of M. Haramburu. Enamel is not a common detour for a painter, and it left a mark on how he thinks about colour and surface.

Back in Orihuela he spent seven years, from 1997 to 2004, in Federico Chico's painting workshop, and that long apprenticeship shows in the confidence of the work. He paints between figuration and abstraction, building compositions in layers of colour and expressive mark-making that reward looking closely rather than from the doorway.

He has been exhibiting since 1992, first around Alicante and Murcia, then at the Palais Jacques Coeur in Limoges, and later in three solo outings at Galería Juan de Juanes in Alicante across 2000, 2002 and 2004. His work has also been seen at the Sala-Museo San Juan de Dios in Orihuela and at Unicaja in Almería.
