Angela Carli, contemporary artist represented by Jaloe Art Gallery

Angela Carli

Angela Carli was born in Siena in 1978 and has been painting since she was young. She trained first at the Duccio di Buoninsegna school of applied arts in her own city, then at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts, and came out of it with a style you can pick out from across a room: strong colour, restless composition, and the female figure at the centre of everything.

Her subject is women, and specifically women who have fought for their freedom and independence in a society built against them. She paints them strong and fragile at the same time, tender and difficult, and she does it through the eyes. That is where every canvas starts, because for her the eyes are what unlock the rest of the person. If they do not come out right the painting does not survive: she will destroy a canvas rather than let it leave the studio with the wrong gaze.

Alongside her own work she teaches painting at her own academy, and she has exhibited in galleries across Italy and France.
