Xavi Carbonell, contemporary artist represented by Jaloe Art Gallery

Xavi Carbonell

Xavi Carbonell was born in Alcoy in 1971 and paints with the licence of a child, which is much harder than it sounds. His work comes out of children's drawings, out of his own subconscious, and out of a line that runs through Jean-Michel Basquiat, Antonio Saura and Cy Twombly. What interests him is not how children's art looks but how it is made, before anyone teaches you what a drawing is supposed to be.

The paintings are full: patches of colour, scribbled lines, figures that could have been drawn by a five-year-old with a very good eye. Gestural abstraction is what lets him get his thoughts and feelings out with the least interference, and he leaves the works untitled on purpose so that the story you build in front of them is yours.

He lives in Alcoy and produces between there and New York.
