Francisco Bartus, contemporary artist represented by Jaloe Art Gallery

Francisco Bartus

Francisco Bartus was born in Valencia in 1965. His teachers spotted it early and pushed him towards art school, and he began his career as a professional designer and plastic artist. In that first stage he painted still lifes, applying a modern language and modern technique to a traditional subject, and galleries and collectors took to it immediately.

Then he read Carl Jung, and it changed the work. He moved to a new subject entirely: the idea that some of our deepest feelings are inherited rather than built only from personal experience, and that they can be made visible. Everything he has painted since comes out of that thought, combining powerful pictorial technique with a sense of human collectivity underneath.

His use of mixed media gives the paintings a genuine third dimension. Paint is layered until the surface stands off the canvas, which is the first thing you notice in a room and the thing photographs never quite capture. Materials and techniques change from piece to piece, and that willingness to keep testing is what keeps the work from settling.

Bartus has exhibited widely in the United States, mainly in Florida, California and New York, as well as in France, Spain, and more recently Germany and Switzerland.
