How to Start Your First Art Collection
Starting a collection can feel like it needs a certain income, a certain education, or a certain kind of confidence. It doesn't need any of that, and if you've been putting off a first purchase for one of those reasons, this is where to start instead.
Art Costs Less Than You Think
Most people assume original art starts somewhere they can't afford. A few things explain why one piece costs more than another that looks similar in size. Scale is the most obvious: a small canvas takes less material and less time than a large one, so the price grows with it. Medium matters too, an oil painting or a mixed media piece built up in layers generally costs more to make than a work on paper. And the artist's own trajectory plays a part: someone early in their career, still building a following, tends to price lower than someone with years of shows and a longer list of collectors behind them.
