Taisuke Kinugasa
Taisuke Kinugasa was born in Kyoto in 1989 and taught himself to paint as a boy. He has been exhibiting since 2004, and what he does with colour is genuinely unusual: his perception works like a prism, absorbing light, amplifying it and turning it into an array of colour that then goes onto the canvas.
The results are landscapes and still lifes of extraordinary saturation. High-purity colour sets up contrasts and rhythms that read as movement, and the decorative structure underneath gives the work its sense of surprise. His world of light sits apart from ordinary memory and interpretation, which is exactly why it holds you.
He has held solo shows in Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo and New York, and exhibited at Gallery Miracle in Kyoto and Gallery CASO in Osaka as well as at Takashimaya and Isetan. He has been recognised at the All-Japan Art Salon and at the New York Zeroart contemporary art competition.
Beyond the studio he collaborates with brands such as Heralbony, who have turned his paintings into wearable pieces including handkerchiefs and stoles, and he takes part in live painting events. One of them was a hand-dyed painting twenty-five metres long.
