Paolo Fedeli
Paolo Fedeli was born in Florence in 1957, which means Tuscany was his first teacher. He grew up surrounded by the landscape and the architecture that generations of artists have travelled to see, started painting young, and went on to earn a Master of Arts at the Art Institute of Siena.
His subject has widened over the years without ever losing that starting point. Alongside the Tuscan countryside he now paints cities, Venice, London and New York among them, approached with the same attention he gives a field at the end of the day. He tends to work close in, choosing an intimate corner over the wide view, so a canal or a street feels close enough to walk into.
Light does most of the work. He builds strong contrast in the foreground and lets the background soften, which keeps the paintings fresh however much detail they carry. He usually paints outdoors and draws straight onto the canvas without preliminary sketches, and he mixes his own paints, which is part of why the colour behaves the way it does.
His work has been recognised in more than 150 Italian art competitions, including the Rana d'Oro, and he exhibits internationally.
