India Shea
India Shea writes on her paintings. Handwritten phrases are the core of her work, chosen with enough care that they open memory rather than describe it, and what they set off in you ranges from nostalgia to something closer to reckoning.
Her practice sits between modern conceptual art and the rhythm of ordinary life. She goes after human emotion through etymology, through where words come from and what they have carried, and through the small mechanics of personal relationships. The result is a refined linguistic abstraction that never turns cold, because the spontaneity of the mark is still there next to the thinking.
What you get is work that is intellectually engaging and emotionally honest at once, and that asks you to bring your own experience to it. She invites you to look at the whole mosaic of what has shaped you, and at the small differences that make your emotional landscape yours and not somebody else's.
