Fernanz

Fernanz has been making things since he was very young, and he committed to abstraction early. It has been the centre of his career rather than a phase he passed through.

The work is loud in the best sense: strong colour, hard contrast, brushwork that does not hesitate, and movement everywhere you look. What holds it together is his control of colour, and specifically of how colours behave once they are mixed and set against each other. That is the part that is difficult to learn and the part that makes the paintings hold you.

He builds in layers, several of them, and finishes matte. He mixes whatever the piece needs along the way: oil, acrylic, ink, gouache, pencil. That is where the texture comes from, and why no two areas of one of his canvases behave the same way.

He is self-taught and still at it, still researching and still updating what he knows. He also had the chance to train with some of the best art teachers in Alicante, and that discipline is there underneath all the energy.
