JM Reyes, contemporary artist represented by Jaloe Art Gallery

JM Reyes

Jose Manuel Reyes was born in 1963 in the San Miguel quarter of Jerez de la Frontera, and everything in his painting comes from there. Jerez is one of the noblest towns in Cadiz, a place where aristocratic palaces, historic architecture, horses, flamenco and sherry all share the same streets, and he has spent his career painting what that upbringing left in him.

He is self-taught and has given his whole working life to painting. He began with realist still lifes set against classic backgrounds and refined the technique until it became a command of the Andalusian style. Those still lifes are still part of the work, alongside his harvest scenes and his religious painting, but what collectors know him for is the animal.

The horse and the bull reach him as mythological figures rather than as subjects. He watches how they move, catches the gesture and puts that on the canvas instead of the anatomy, which is why the paintings feel like something happening rather than something posed. The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, the traditional fairs and the culture around them are all behind it, and his colour and composition carry the rest.

He has exhibited nationally and internationally, in Madrid, Seville, Granada, Paris and New York.
